GENDER AFFIRMING SURGERY

At SAFER SIX, we understand that the decision to pursue gender-affirming surgery is deeply personal, and we are dedicated to providing compassionate, expert care throughout the process.

We are now accepting patients for gender-affirming surgical assessments (first and second) to support your application for coverage under the Ministry of Health of Ontario’s (MOH) gender-affirming surgery program.

Our team is here to provide the necessary assessments, guidance, and support to help you navigate this important step in your gender-affirming journey. We work closely with you to ensure that all medical, psychological, and health requirements are met so you can access the care you need.

What is a Gender Affirming Surgical Assessment?

A gender-affirming surgical assessment is an evaluation conducted by one of our medical professionals (who are trained in gender affirming care) to determine if you meet the criteria for gender-affirming surgeries, such as chest or breast augmentation, genital reconstruction, or other related procedures.

This assessment is required for individuals seeking funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health for gender-affirming surgeries.

The purpose of this assessment is to ensure that you:

  • Have a well-informed understanding of the surgery and its potential risks, benefits, and outcomes.

  • Are emotionally and psychologically prepared for the changes surgery may bring.

  • Meet the criteria set by the Ministry of Health for surgery eligibility and OHIP funding.

Our Approach to Surgical Assessments

We prefer to take a holistic, patient-centered approach to our gender-affirming surgical assessments. We understand that each person’s needs and experiences are unique, and our goal is to provide thorough, respectful, and supportive care.

Our process includes:

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: During your assessment, we’ll take time to understand your medical and psychological history, as well as your goals for gender-affirming surgery. We’ll discuss your options, clarify your expectations, and provide information about the surgical procedures available. These visits may take 1 or 2 appointments depending on the type of gender affirming surgery you are requesting.

  • Medical Consultation and Health Assessment: Our experienced medical team will review your overall health to ensure you’re physically prepared for surgery. We will address any underlying health conditions and discuss how they may affect your surgical options, and make any appropriate referrals if needed for further health investigations prior to surgery..

  • Ministry of Health Application: Once the assessment is complete and all criteria are met, we will complete the necessary application and submit to the Ministry of Health for approval. This includes a letter of support from our team, which is a key requirement in your application for surgery funding in Ontario.
